Buying used AEGs
AEGs (automatic electric guns) are the most common replica on New Zealand fields. A battery drives a motor and gearbox that cycles a piston, so they shoot the same on a frosty winter morning as on a summer afternoon, and running costs are little more than BBs and the occasional battery.
Because so many players upgrade or switch platforms, used AEGs are the deepest part of the second-hand market. M4 and AR platforms, AKs, MP5s and ARP9-style PDWs turn up constantly, along with full-blown NGRS (next generation recoil shock) builds from Tokyo Marui.
When you look at a used AEG, ask for a video of it firing on semi and full auto and a chrono reading with 0.20g BBs. Ask which battery connector it uses (Deans/T-plug or Tamiya) and what battery it was run on, whether it has a MOSFET, and what internal upgrades have been done. A smooth, even gearbox note is a good sign; grinding, a slow cycle or a stuck trigger is not. Our LiPo guide covers batteries.
You generally need to be 18 or over to buy or own an airsoft replica in New Zealand, or 16 and over with a firearms licence. See airsoft age limits and is airsoft legal in New Zealand?

Questions
How much do used AEGs cost in NZ?
On TradeSoft right now, most AEGs are listed at $400 to $800. Across the 67 that sold in the last 90 days, the middle asking price was $500. Condition, brand and upgrades move the price a lot, so compare similar listings before you buy or sell.
Are used AEGs worth buying?
Usually, yes. AEGs are simple and robust, and a well-kept used one from a good brand will often outperform a cheaper new replica. Check the FPS, ask for a firing video and confirm what is included.
What battery does an AEG need?
Most modern AEGs run on 7.4V or 11.1V LiPo batteries. Check what the seller ran it on, what connector it uses, and whether the replica has a MOSFET, especially before using an 11.1V battery.
